This village is situated along the side of Mount Vulture dominating the Vitalba valley. Its origins probably dateto the 3rd century B.C. when the village of Vitalba, allie to Hannibal, was destroyed by the Romans and its inhabitants sheltered in the near territory where present-day Atella stands. The ancient village was abandoned for a certain period of time and in 1330, it was repopulated by some peasants coming from Rionero led by the Durazzo family. In 1423, the territory was ruled by Giovanni Caracciolo while in 1496 it was occupied by the French armies of Gilbert De Montpensier. After a siege that lasted32 days, it was later conquered by Consalvo Cordova. It was then ruled by Filippo Chalon in 1530, by Antonio Layva in 1532, by the Capuas, the Gesualdos, the Filomarinos and by the Caracciolos of Torella who succeded one another until the subversion of feudalism. ATELLA was destroyed by an earthquake which occurred in 1694 and that destroyed part of Castle of which it is possible to admire only the Angevin tower restored in 1993. the imposing construction of the "Duomo di Santa Maria" (Cathedral of ST.Mary), dating from the 14th century, is situated in the main square of the village. It is characerized by a beautiful portal on which the sun and the moon, symbols referring to Islamic representations, are engraved. The Chatedral houses several wooden sculptures dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, several paintings, a wooden choir as well as 17th-century altars. This church was restored after the earthquake occurred in 1980 and was reopened in 1993. particularly enchanting is rhe "Chiesetta di Santa Lucia" (Church of St.Lucy), built in 1389, housing a 15th-century fresco depicting the Madonna delle Grazie also called Madonna Riparatrice and the remins of a fresco painted by Gerardo Todisco from Abriola.noteworthy are the Holy Week rites, especially those occurring on Good Thursday during whichthe "battenti" (people wearing a hood) hit themselves with a whip and share Christ's turture. The territory of ATELLA is characterizedby thick woods, by springs as well as by plots of lands where cereal cultivationsare widespread.
